We have lots of awards and announements to make here at the end of the spring semester. Congratulations to Sarah for taking home first prize in the annual BME departmental retreat poster competition! She hopes to use her cash prize to help procure a baby mini horse! Also, congrats to Greg, who recently defended his dissertation. He and Andy have now completed all their requirements for graduation! Andy recently won an award from CBTE for being a stellar, example graduate student. Also, Mingnan took home a postdoc proster prize at this CBTE gathering! So many awards!

Team Chilkoti has been celebrating like crazy over the past week. First of all, we bade farewell to Sterling who will be finishing his postdoc tenure in our group. Also, we celebrated Andy's successful dissertation defense over the weekend. Congratulations Andy! Sorry, no photographic evidence of these occurrences. However, we do have photographic evidence of Vicky's farewell dinner at Dos Perros, here in Durham! Sterling, Andy, and Vicky; we will miss you all! However, we look forward to new additions to the lab. We'd like to extend a VERY warm welcome to Zareen Kapadia, who will be our new lab manager!

The Chilkoti Group bids farewell to Tak, who recently returned to Japan after visiting our group. We wish him luck in the future! Also, congratulations to Mingnan who recently won the Citizen Advisory Council Poster Award at the 2009 Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center Annual Meeting. He presented a poster on his drug delivery work done in collaboration with Andrew, Andy, Wenge, and Jonathan.

Congrats to Weiping and company for their recent publication in PNAS. Science Daily has picked up on the potential impact these protein-polymer conjugates can have on increasing drug efficacy in vivo with their recent research highlight. Chilkoti Group Annual Summer Picnic! The group gathered in the Duke Forest to have their 2nd annual summer picnic and 2nd Annual Chilkoti Pro Summer League Volleyball Championship. The weather was near perfect; lots of foods were consumed; and the vball competition was fierce. Check the pics from the event. Huge thanks to Vicky and Amy for organizing, setting up, and for taking pics!

The Chilkoti Group gathered at Tosh's house for Andrew's farewell party. He will be leaving us soon to begin work as an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy! The Chilkoti Group rested all their pipettors, shut down all their centrifuges, and cancelled all plasmon propagation today in favor of gathering at Little River Park (just north of tropical Durham, NC) for a summer picnic! Given the relatively dry heat, all sorts of summer fun was had; frisbees, volleyball, badminton, soccer, nature walking, sun burning, sweating, hydrating, eating, etc. Multiple photographers were on hand to document the ongoings, however, no one managed to capture evidence of the small fire we started! We did, however, capture a particularly fierce volleyball sequence (be sure to click over to the play by play commentary as well) during our professional volleyball tournament. Also, check out another gallery with all sorts of pictures from the event. Thanks to Amy and Vicky for making this happen!

Congratulations to Dan and Nikki Callahan who, as of 1:04am, became the proud parents of baby Abigail Marie Callahan! Everyone appears to be in great health, and the newest addition to the Callahan family weighed in at 7 lb 15 oz (20 inches long) with dark brown hair and dark blue eyes.
